AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin Police Department said it was investigating after a man died after shooting at officers following a vehicle pursuit that ended in northwest Austin Thursday morning.
The police department posted about the shooting on X at 9:53 a.m., saying it happened in the 9500 block of North Farm to Market Road 620. According to APD, the incident began shortly after 3 a.m.
APD said outside agencies were pursuing a person when the subject stopped and carjacked a vehicle from a woman. Police said the subject later carjacked another vehicle.
Officers also learned the person had a shotgun and another weapon.
APD said officers found the carjacked vehicle at an apartment complex where the person kicked in the door to a residence. As he began to leave the residence, APD said officers asked him to stop.
According to police, the subject started to run, turned and pointed his weapon at the officers before firing a shot. APD said the officers shot back, and the subject was later pronounced dead. No officers were injured.
Police are asking people to avoid the area and expect street closures nearby.
APD is expected to hold an additional media briefing within 24 hours to provide more information. This story will be updated.
