We keep seeing cases of tow trucks used to transport stolen cars in plain sight and it’s happened again, this time in Ontario, Canada. Police found something fishy about a tow truck transporting a Range Rover and Jeep Wrangler, so they pulled it over and quickly realized both vehicles were stolen.
Tow truck caught stealing cars in St. Louis.
There are a few good reasons why police in Ontario thought something was up. For starters, the tow truck was driving around just before midnight, which happens but is unusual. Another car was driving closely behind it and that’s what really drew attention, says CTV News.
After pulling over not only the tow truck but the car following it, police couldn’t find documents showing proper ownership for the two vehicles being towed. A further investigation revealed both had been stolen. Both drivers were arrested and hit with multiple criminal charges.
Police even found an automobile master key on the driver who was tailing the tow truck.
Why the second driver decided to follow the tow truck so closely isn’t clear, but that was what really led to the downfall of both drivers. Often, it’s stupid moves like that which get criminals caught.
Normally, people don’t question a tow truck hauling a vehicle, so they can make a great way to move around stolen cars. However, in this case police charged the driver of the tow truck with several violations related to how the Range Rover and Jeep were secured and being towed. That might have also tipped them off to the fact something sinister was going on.
We’re not sure if the driver of the tow truck does that professionally since the report doesn’t say either way. Likely the tow truck wasn’t stolen in this case, something we see sometimes.
