Updated: 10-11-2024, 12.36 AM

A federal judge on Thursday sentenced Florida murder suspect Arnett Jackson Bonner III to three years and 4 months in prison for a federal firearms violation following his arrest in a traffic stop on the Mississippi Coast.

In addition, District Judge Sul Ozerden ordered Bonner to serve three years after his release on probation and fined him $5,000.

At the time of his arrest in November 2023, an FBI agent testified in federal court in Gulfport that Bonner reached for a gun during the stop on Interstate 10 near Gautier in Jackson County.

A border patrol agent and Gautier police worked on the investigation that resulted in the recovery of three firearms and marijuana.

At the time of the arrest, Bonner told authorities he kept the firearm he reached for under his driver’s seat for protection., and that he had two other guns in the car that he had agreed to clean for those who owned the weapons, according to the testimony.

Bonner has remained jailed without bond since his 2023 arrest because he violated the conditions of his bond in Florida on a second-degree murder charge.

Bonner is still facing trial in Jacksonville, Florida, for the May 25, 2020, beating death of James Bryan Cole, 51, outside a gas station, records show.

According to the federal agent who testified at his detention hearing on the firearm charge in Mississippi, authorities stopped Bonner after spotting his car going into a southbound exit land before he suddenly maneuvered back onto the highway without a turn signal.

When the agent made the claims about the reason for the stop, Bonner turned his head to the back of the court and said, “ Liar.”
