Salt Lake City in for warmer winter season with uncertain precipitation outlook

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) released its outlook for the upcoming winter season and it’s looking like Utah may be in store for a warm winter.

The NOAA said a slowly developing La Nina is setting up and will likely influence above-average temperatures across the Beehive State.

This is not to say it won’t be cold over the meteorological winter season – which runs from December to February.

According to the National Weather Service, Salt Lake City’s average temperature over the three winter months is anywhere from 31 degrees to 35 degrees Fahrenheit. The La Nina outlook predicts much of the Wasatch Front and Central Utah will have up to a 40% chance of running above those temperatures while the southern portion of Utah has a 50% of running higher than average.

As far as precipitation, that’s a little harder for the NOAA to predict.

Current predictions suggest southern Utah will be drier this year compared to most winters. However, the Wasatch Front and northern Utah have equal chances of seeing above-normal, normal, and below-normal levels of precipitation.
