Updated: 04-11-2024, 04.36 AM

Three people were killed this weekend and another person was hospitalized following three separate crashes in the same Lowcountry county, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The fatal collisions happened over a 19-hour span in Jasper County, said Master Trooper Gary Miller.

The most recent wreck happened just after midnight Sunday, according to Miller.

The single-vehicle collision occurred on Purrysburg Road near Church Road, Miller said.

A 2013 Nissan Altima was driving east on Purrysburg Road when it ran off the right side of the road and crashed into a ditch before hitting a tree, according to Miller.

The driver was the only person in the Nissan and died, Miller said.

There was no word if the driver was wearing a seat belt and information about what caused the Nissan to veer off the road was not available.

There was another deadly wreck in Jasper County about 5 hours earlier. It happened about 1 mile from Sunday’s crash.

At about 7 p.m. Saturday, a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado was driving south on Church Road when it collided with a southbound bicycle near Seabreeze Drive, killing the bike rider, according to Miller.

The Chevy driver, who was the only person in the pickup truck, was not hurt, Miller said.

There were no lights or reflectors on the bicycle, according to Miller.

It was dark out when the other crash happened at about 5:15 a.m. Saturday, Miller reported.

That two-vehicle collision happened on S.C. 462 near Bolan Hall Road, according to Miller.

A 2002 Ford Ranger pickup was driving west on S.C. 462 when it crossed left of the center line and crashed head-on with an eastbound 1998 Mercury Grand Marquis, Miller said.

The car driver died, while the pickup driver was taken to an area hospital, according to Miller. Further information on the surviving driver’s condition was not available.

Miller said the drivers were the only people in their respective vehicles, and no other injuries were reported.

There was no word if either driver was wearing a seat belt.

Information about what caused the Ford pickup to veer into oncoming traffic was not available, but Miller said this crash continued to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

The Jasper County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified any of the victims who died in the unrelated crashes.

Through Oct. 27, at least 806 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2024, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 17 people have died in Jasper County crashes in 2024, according to DPS data.
