Gulfport announced this week it has rescheduled its annual Gumbo Fest to January because of possible impacts from Tropical Storm Rafael.
The event was originally scheduled for Saturday but will now take place on January 25.
The city said the delay was disappointing but the right choice.
“Rescheduling is the best course of action to ensure everyone’s safety and to provide the best possible experience for our attendees and community,” Jase Payne, a public information officer for Gulfport, said in a news release.
Saturday would have marked the third annual Gumbo Fest — an event at Centennial Plaza that includes a gumbo cook-off, art vendors and live music. Forecasters said Tuesday that it was too early to tell if Tropical Storm Rafael will impact the Gulf Coast. Some models show the storm could approach Louisiana, Mississippi or Alabama this weekend as a weak tropical system that would mostly bring rain.
Instead, Gumbo Fest will occur in the winter, “when a warm cup or bowl of gumbo will be just what we all need,” Payne said.
The city said all vendor registrations will still be honored in January.
