A new movie about an Formula 1 race car driver starring Brad Pitt was seen filming in Oceano this week.
“F1,” which tells the story of fictional driver Sonny Hayes and his quest to return to racing after a crash, appeared to be being filmed at the Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area this week.
Warner Bros. and Apple Studios filming vehicles and production crews staged at the Grand Avenue parking lot in Grover Beach starting Sunday, with filming expected to last through Thursday, according to State Parks spokesperson Kevin Pearce.
Around 20 production vehicles including trailers, trucks and camera crane vehicles and more than 40 crew members were assembled near Post 3 on Wednesday.
On-set chairs for producers Chad Oman, Jerry Bruckheimer and Jeremy Kleiner were spotted on set — all three of whom are involved with the movie.
A pair of beachgoers told The Tribune they spotted Pitt filming at the Dunes on Wednesday morning near Post 3.
The Dunes were expected to remain open to the public during filming, though the area was being patrolled by security and California State Parks officers and may be subject to intermittent traffic control and delays.
Pearce said the Oceano Dunes District has been working with the California Film Commission on a film permit request for the use of the SVRA for the better part of this year.
“California State Parks is proud to support the film industry,” Pearce said. “By keeping filming opportunities in California, and especially here in San Luis Obispo County, we are able to highlight our beautiful parks, we get to share our amazing Central Coast with new friends and support the economy of our local businesses.”
“F1” is scheduled to be released in theaters June 25, 2025, starring Pitt, Damson Idris, Kerry Condon, Tobias Menzies, Javier Bardem and Sarah Niles.
