Crash that severely injured RCSO deputy caused by fellow deputy

Updated: 08-11-2024, 12.17 AM

The Georgia State Patrol recently released more information about a car chase that left a Richmond County Sheriff’s Office investigator severely injured, revealing it was another RCSO patrol car that hit him at a high rate of speed.

While responding to a carjacking on Caldwell Drive on Oct. 24, Inv. Christopher Brown, 35, got into a car chase with Omarion Rayshaun Steward, of Hephzibah, according to previous reporting.

During the chase, a 25-year-old RCSO deputy, Nicholas Trevon Boyd, hit Brown’s car on Gordon Highway, according to a crash report from GSP.

Brown was driving behind Boyd in an unmarked vehicle and as Boyd attempted to make a U-turn, he “overshot the turn” and hit the driver’s side of Brown’s car, according to the report.

Boyd’s car rotated counterclockwise and struck a raised concrete median, according to GSP. Brown’s car veered off and struck a concrete curb.

Both Boyd and Brown were injured and taken to Augusta University Hospital, according to the report.

GSP determined Boyd was at fault for the crash.

GoFundMe set up for Brown notes Boyd’s car was travelling more than 100 miles per hour when it hit Brown’s car, The Chronicle reported. Brown sustained critical injuries to his pelvis, arms, jaw, leg, and various other parts of his body.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to inquiries from The Chronicle on Wednesday seeking more information.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office has yet to speak publicly about the incident.
