Joseph Andrew Shreve, 30, was arrested on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon for allegedly firing at a truck that he claimed had rear-ended his vehicle on Sept. 18 on Zaragoza Road, El Paso police officials said on Tuesday, Oct. 22.

Detectives determined that the account of the shooting given by Shreve was “inconsistent with the investigation,” an El Paso police news release stated.

El Paso County Jail records show Shreve was booked into the Downtown jail on Thursday, Oct. 17, and released that same day on a $250,000 bond.

Shreve is listed as an EPISD police officer on a staff list on the school district’s website. EPISD did not immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday night.

The shooting occurred about 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 18 in the 2000 block of North Zaragoza Road near the intersection with Joe Battle Boulevard and Montwood Drive.

The shooting investigation had shut down a portion of the Loop 375 northbound connection to Zaragoza Road, officials said.

El Paso police said that detectives were called to assist EPISD police in the investigation of the shooting.

During the initial investigation, Shreve allegedly reported that his vehicle had been rear-ended by a truck in “a manner that placed him in fear for his life,” police stated. Shreve allegedly shot at the truck and chased it before ending the pursuit and calling the police.

There were no reported injuries. The shooting victim was identified by police as Armando Nieto, 32, of Horizon City.

Police stated that Shreve’s version of events did not match the findings of the investigation. The inconsistencies were not disclosed.
