With Election Day just one day away, about 50% of Florida’s registered voters have already cast their ballots, according to Florida Division of Elections data and registered voters data analyzed by the Miami Herald. The Herald’s calculations include both active and inactive voters who are eligible to vote.
Only seven of Florida’s 67 counties had Democrats leading in voter turnout for early voting and vote by mail. However, those seven counties’ registered voters represent about 26% of all registered voters in the state.
While there’s no way to tell exactly how people voted until after the polls close on Election Day, each county’s Department of Elections reports how many registered voters have already voted and which parties they are registered under. The Herald used the number of registered voters in Florida as of Sept. 30. It is likely that more people registered by the state’s registration deadline on Oct. 7, but those figures — which include both active and inactive registered voters — won’t be available until after the election.
Monday morning’s data shows that even though registered Democrats had submitted more vote-by-mail ballots, registered Republicans had almost 845,000 more votes — a number that includes both early voting and vote by mail — than Democrats. In total, over 8 million people had already voted through Sunday.
About 53% percent of all registered Republicans, 51% of registered Democrats and about 39% of people registered with no party affiliation have voted early or by mail in the state.
The map below shows what turnout looked like in each county after early voting closed. You can also see which party had a turnout advantage in each county.
In Miami-Dade, Republicans held on to the turnout advantage as early voting closed. About 52% of registered voters in the county have voted early or voted by mail.
While all counties are required to report their totals from the day prior to Florida’s Division of Elections at 8 a.m., the division’s site refreshes numbers until 6 p.m., allowing counties with technical difficulties more time to submit.
Party affiliation
As of Sept. 30, Republicans had an almost five-percentage-point advantage over registered Democrats in Florida in terms of voter registration numbers.
That number has been rapidly increasing in the last two years. In August 2022, the advantage was less than one percentage point.
