Three area schools have have nominated exceptional teens for Montgomery Advertiser Student of the Week, and you can honor their work by casting your vote.
Student of the Week honors the hard work that high school students across the River Region put into their studies, their schools and their greater community every day, and it aims to recognize as many awesome high schoolers as possible. Every public and private high school in the outer Montgomery area is eligible to nominate one student a week who exemplifies success in academics and community involvement.
Nominees are revealed each Monday, and readers can vote for free until 1 p.m. each Thursday. The winner is revealed each Friday. There have been hundreds of thousands of votes for Student of the Week since the beginning of the semester.
Here are the three excellent nominees for this week:
Kaylee Carter, BTW High School: Kaylee is an efficient scholar who is successful academically and creatively and participates in many extracurriculars. She holds many officer and leadership titles in sports and clubs, and Kaylee also assists with the Parent Teacher Student Association events, as her mother is a member of the PTSA. Her whole family has a lot of love and support for BTW and its scholars.
Donavan Brown, Prattville High School: Donavan is an 11th-grade student who is a member of the football team and a member of the student ambassadors at Centerpoint Church. Donavan is often recognized for his athletic talents, but he is talented in the classroom as well. Educators say he’s a model student and person, taking challenging courses such as AP English Language and Composition and continuing to further his academic career. He is focused, determined and thoughtful, and leads by example both in the classroom and on the field. His teachers say his understated and quiet demeanor that help him shine at the school. He plans to attend the University of Alabama at Birmingham when he graduates and major in physical education.
Yash Param, LAMP High School: Senior Yash Param is a finalist in the mayor’s Young Professionals Scholarship program, and he was recently elected as the national legislation and advocacy director for the High School Democrats of America. Yash founded the Alabama Students for Change, which provides public speaking opportunities to more than 180 students from all over the state. Through this, he collaborates with lawmakers and nonprofits. He has interned with the Equal Justice Initiative, and he has published a book, Jaanu, which explores the challenges of mental illness, racial inequality and gun violence prevention. Yash has a 4.2 GPA, and he is captain of LAMP’s speech and debate team and the mock trial team.
