SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Coming on the market for a record $108 million, a cliffside mansion overlooking the Pacific Ocean is slated to shatter the San Diego County record if it sells for asking price.
Locally known as The Sandcastle, the 10 bedroom home at 1900 Spindrift Dr. in La Jolla, Calif. was built in 2005, the owner taking inspiration from France, both from Versailles and from the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes, according to Realtor.com and listing agents Brett Dickinson and Ross Clark of Compass.

The 13,000-square-foot home is coming on the market for $108 million, and would shatter the San Diego County record of $44 million set earlier this year for a oceanfront Del Mar home. It also has a few things that will never be replicated in California ever again.
“As you walk through you really start to get an appreciation for the quality of what you are looking at,” said Ross Clark, one of the listing agents for the Sandcastle.
Styled in an ode to France’s Louis XV, the double oceanfront lot with private access to the La Jolla Shores stands front and center to the Pacific Ocean with a northwest facing view.
“The Le Petit Trianon, which is Marie Antoinette’s home when she lived there at the chateau, and it’s so similar the architectural style,” said Brett Dickinson, one of the listing agents for the Sandcastle.

But the Sandcastle is also uniquely La Jolla. It has an elevator access to the shores and in a secret cave it even has an area where the previous owner used to raise lobsters.
Compass agent Dickinson says while it looks museum quality, it lives like a real home. With 10 bedrooms and 17 bathrooms, it truly a mega mansion that would rival any home on the planet.
“Either come over to the pool and look at the gorgeous view, or they go all the way down to where the private beach is and they stand there in disbelief that this is actually on the property,” said Dickinson.
The home features a grand living room with coffered ceilings and arched windows overlooking the bay that leads to a wraparound terrace. A 16-person dining room has gold-leaf detailing and a crystal chandelier.
The guesthouse has a nautical-themed bar with hand-painted sea imagery and a pair of 18th-century mermaid statues.

The property includes a pool, fitness center, a wood-paneled office, two cabanas and a beachfront boathouse with a small kitchen. There is also a small private elevated beach area for lounge chairs, which features $40,000 worth of sand imported by the owner from the Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia.
“From the quality to the location to your own private beach to be able to walk to have access to the private beach, it has everything you want,” said Clark.
What renters should know about breaking a lease to buy a home
The listing says the owner is selling the home he uses as a vacation home because he doesn’t use it as much as his other homes.
The La Jolla home has direct beach access and a sea wall, which the agents noted would not be permitted now following the California Coastal Act.
