Latest Update on Tropical Storm Rafael

Updated: 05-11-2024, 08.56 PM

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – Not much has changed from the last update from the NHC on Rafael’s strength. Windspeeds are sustained at 60 mph and the movement is to the NNW at 13 mph. At this rate it will bring hurricane force impacts to the Cayman Islands tonight as strengthening will occur through out the afternoon and evening.

Rafael is likely to be a Hurricane with the next few updates. Jamaica will be under the influence of Rafael’s tropical storm conditions throughout the afternoon.

Once in the Gulf, the models are ‘all over the place’ with the exact location of a potential landfall. The big take away from the forecast this weekend is that WEAKENING is highly likely to occur from Hurricane, to tropical storm (or less) force.

For this afternoon, isolated showers continue. Highs in the low 80s. Rain tapers off by the evening hours, right around sunset.
