NHC watching system in Caribbean Sea, two systems in Pacific Ocean

Updated: 28-10-2024, 01.06 PM

Things are calm in the Atlantic Ocean for now, however that could change later this week, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The hurricane center said Monday a “broad area of low pressure” is likely to develop over the southwestern Caribbean Sea in a few days, and gradual development is possible thereafter.

Forecasters said a tropical depression could form late this week or over the weekend while the system begins to drift northward or northeastward over the southwestern and central Caribbean Sea.

The NHC gives the system a 40 percent chance of formation through the next seven days, according to Monday’s advisory. The next named storms of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season will be Patty and Rafael.

The NHC also said Monday it is tracking an area of low pressure located more than 1,000 miles southwest of the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula that is producing “disorganized showers and thunderstorms.”

Forecasters said environmental conditions appear conducive for gradual development of this system, and a tropical depression is “likely to form within the next few days” as the system moves westward or west-northwestward over the western portion of the eastern Pacific basin.

The hurricane center gives this system a 60 percent chance of formation through the next seven days.

Additionally, the NHC said a low pressure system could form within the next day or two several hundred miles south-southwest of the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula.

Some slow development of this system is possible thereafter while the system moves slowly toward the west-northwest, according to forecasters, with the system having a 20 percent chance of formation through the next seven days.
