Oregon Lottery says Shari’s owes it nearly $900K after sudden closure

Updated: 24-10-2024, 04.51 AM

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – After every Shari’s in Oregon suddenly closed on Monday, the Oregon Lottery — which supplied video lottery machines to their locations — says the restaurant group owes them nearly $900,000.

A Oregon Lottery spokesperson told KOIN 6 News the outstanding debt comes after the restaurant had non-sufficient funds on Oct. 16, as first reported by Central Oregon Daily News.

This debt amounted to $902,341.98, but the restaurant could also owe money for the funds collected the weekend before their closure, according to spokesperson Melanie Mesaros.

“Each week, our retailers deposit money into an account for what’s called our ‘draw’ or the revenue that’s due to us for Video Lottery play. When a retailer fails to pay their weekly electric fund transfer draw and the bank does not pay due to “non sufficient funds” or NSF, they are required to pay us immediately or our equipment will be disabled,” Mesaros said.

If the money is not paid, the debt could eventually go to collections.

Court records also show a number of lawsuits filed against the company claiming the corporation failed to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in unpaid bills.

KOIN has reached out to a number of people in the corporate office this week — including the owner — to see if these closures are permanent and how widespread these closures could be. However, we have only received an auto message from the president saying they have resigned.
