A patient at The Meadows Psychiatric Center was arrested Wednesday for an assault that state police at Rockview said sent at least two workers to the hospital.
Devan A. Shambo, 29, of New York, was accused of punching three workers in the face Wednesday as staffers grabbed and attempted to “forcibly administer” medication, police wrote in an affidavit of probable cause. He had refused to take the medication orally.
The three workers who were injured reported redness and swelling in the face, as well as a suspected concussion, police wrote. At least two of them were treated at Mount Nittany Medical Center.
Shambo admitted to punching the trio but said he did so in self-defense because he did not want to take the medication, police wrote.
He was charged with three felony counts of aggravated assault, three misdemeanor counts of simple assault and three summary counts of harassment. A defense lawyer was not listed and the Centre County Public Defender Office said it was not appointed to represent him as of Thursday afternoon.
Shambo was arraigned Wednesday by District Judge Gregory Koehle and did not post his $25,000 bail. He is incarcerated at the Centre County Correctional Facility.
His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Oct. 30.
