Abilene police are investigating a death that occurred Tuesday at a hotel in the 5200 block of South First Street.
Around 9:25 p.m., medical responders were called to assist a 34-year-old woman who was believed to be under the influence of narcotics and in medical distress, according to statements from family members.
Due to the allegation of narcotics being at the scene, medical responders called APD to clear the scene.
When police officers made contact with the woman she refused medical attention, the police statement said.
Medical personnel left the scene, and the woman allegedly got into a verbal altercation with family members, according to the release. She allegedly produced a handgun, firing one round at herself in the presence of family and APD officers.
The woman was pronounced deceased at the scene due to an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, and an autopsy has been ordered, the release said.
Police did not release the woman’s name.
At no time was an officers’ weapon fired during the incident, the release said.
