Section of Columbia blocked off because of mental-health emergency, SC police say

A mental-health emergency on Tuesday afternoon has prompted police to close off a section of Columbia to all traffic.

There was a large law enforcement officer presence at 1100 block of Fairview Road, off of Milwood Avenue, according to the Columbia Police Department. That’s in the part of Columbia between Gervais Street and Devine Street, not far from the Five Points area.

Officers blocked all vehicle and pedestrian traffic from entering the area, police.

Specific information about the emergency, and the number of people involved was not available.

No injuries have been reported.

Additionally, no arrests have been reported by police, who said more information would be released “when appropriate.”

There was no word about when the area is expected to be reopened, and the public is asked to stay away.
