LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Residents in a southeast Las Vegas valley neighborhood are saying they have been left in the dark as the streetlights in the area have not worked for months.
“It seems like each year, this neighborhood gets progressively worse. It might be time to move if these issues persist,” five-year resident, Sean Kennelly told 8 News Now.
Kennelly and other residents told 8 News Now that their neighborhood near Tropicana Avenue and Boulder Highway has seen an influx of problems. The issues range from nearly a dozen streetlights out since February to garbage left on the side of the road for weeks at a time.
“It’s a constant problem. People dump mattresses, fridges, grills and car parts among other things,” he shared.
The most recent incident now has residents fearing for their safety.
“We have these cluster mailboxes, two of them side by side were completely ripped out of the ground. Unbolted and there’s no light over there so it made it easy for these thieves to come in and do it,” Kennelly said. “We have to go all the way to Vegas Valley to get our mail now as it’s on hold so it’s very inconvenient.”
Fellow neighbors like Anthony Castillo are tired of being left in the dark acknowledging that part of the problem is that copper wire thieves come into the neighborhood and rip the wiring out of the light posts. Castillo and Kennelly want the County to step up their efforts and bring light back to their block so that crime doesn’t continue to escalate.
“Makes you feel bad like nobody cares about the area and it sucks to see everything go down and down,” Castillo shared.
Kennelly shared he has put in several claims on the Clark County Fixit App, with no luck. Also reaching out to his County Commissioner, Jim Gibson with no response.
