A South Jersey doctor has received a 15-month prison term for his role in a $5-million health insurance fraud.
Brian Sokalsky, 46, of Margate was accused of prescribing costly compounded medications as part of a conspiracy with a pharmaceutical sales representative. The drugs, which were not medically necessary, were covered by health insurers for state and local government workers, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for New Jersey.
Compound medications are made by pharmacists to meet patients’ specific needs.

Sokalsky agreed to authorize prescriptions in a conspiracy with former pharmaceutical sales representative Matthew Tedesco, 49, of Linwood, the federal prosecutor’s office said in a statement.
In turn, Tedesco referred patients to Sokalsky’s practice.
Sokalsky admitted guilt in March 2023 to conspiring to commit health care fraud. He must pay restitution of $5.1 million under a sentence imposed Oct. 29 in Camden federal court.
Tedesco admitted guilt to health care fraud conspiracy in June 2017. He awaits sentencing.
