Updated: 02-11-2024, 01.53 PM

A West Des Moines man was charged with involuntary manslaughter for a crash in a Hy-Vee parking lot that left a 67-year-old woman dead.

At around 2:47 p.m. on Oct. 21, Des Moines Police Department patrol officers and Des Moines Fire Department rescue personnel responded to the parking lot at Hy-Vee at 2540 E. Euclid Ave. to investigate a report of a crash with injury, Sgt. Paul Parizek said in a news release.

Sheila Kay Albert, 67, of Des Moines, was found in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle, Parizek said. She was transported to UnityPoint-Methodist Medical Center, where she remained hospitalized until her death on Oct. 25, he said.

This was the 15th traffic-related fatality of 2024 and the fourth involving a pedestrian, Parizek said.

The department’s traffic unit completed their investigation and presented their findings to the Polk County Attorney’s Office for review and charging guidance, Parizek said.

Evidence showed that the crash could have been avoided, Parizek said.

Jordan Allen, 35, of West Des Moines was subsequently arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter, an aggravated misdemeanor, Parizek said.
