Woman charged with providing alcohol to minors after fatal DWI crash

ODESSA, Texas (KMID/KPEJ)- The Odessa Police Department has arrested another person in connection with a hit-and-run drunk driving crash that left 25-year-old Alex Bingham dead. 24-year-old Nadia Trevino has been charged with furnishing alcohol to a minor, a state jail felony.

Bingham died Wednesday morning but was struck by a hit-and-run driver outside his home early Sunday. Here’s what we know of the crash:

Around 1:35 a.m. on October 27, officers with the Odessa Police Department were called to the 3700 block of Everglade to investigate a hit and run crash. At the scene, officers found a seriously injured Bingham lying face down in the road. Bingham was taken to Medical Center Hospital where he underwent surgery and was placed on life support; he died several days later.

Bingham’s wife said that her husband went outside after he heard a loud noise and was struck by a dark colored Dodge Challenger that left the scene without stopping.

Investigators followed a trail of skid marks away from the crash site and found the Challenger abandoned down the street from where Bingham was struck. OPD said the Dodge had extensive body damage and was missing its right front wheel; inside the car, officers found a cell phone and wallet belonging to Jose Contreras.

A short time later, officers received a call that the driver could be found at a home on East Century; when officers arrived at the home, the driver was gone, but investigators did speak with two women who said they were in the vehicle when it crashed into Bingham and they confirmed that Contreras was behind the wheel.

While speaking with those witnesses, officers received another call from dispatch advising that Contreras was at a Kent Kwik gas station on N Grandview and that he’d called 911 to report that his car had been stolen.

When investigators arrived at the gas station, they met with Contreras and said he smelled strongly of alcohol and was “extremely emotional”. During an interview with investigators, Contreras reportedly admitted that he’d been drinking and that he knew he’d “hit something” on Everglade but had thought at the time that he’d struck a fence.

Contreras was arrested and booked into the Ector County Law Enforcement Center on one count of Intoxication Assault with a Vehicle Causing Serious Bodily Injury and one count of Collision Causing Serious Bodily Injury, both third-degree felonies. He was released from custody on a combined $30,000 bond the day after the crash but was arrested again on October 30. He’s now facing an additional charge of Intoxication Manslaughter, a second-degree felony.

Now, investigators said they arrested Trevino after learning that she allegedly supplied Contreras with alcohol prior to the crash. OPD said the investigation is ongoing.
