Wyandotte High School teacher hurt in fight between students

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — A Kansas City, Kansas, Public Schools District teacher was assaulted in the classroom. Now they’re on part-time medical leave and sharing their frustration, claiming that the school district isn’t doing enough to solve a significant problem.

Niki Aktipis said if they wanted to brawl, they’d have signed up to be an MMA fighter, but instead were thrust into the middle of a fight at work.

“It’s one student in front of me, hitting me, and then the one is trying to hit the girl in front of me,” Aktipis, a science teacher at Wyandotte High School, recalled.

Aktipis has taught for five years, but what happened on September 5 was something they never imagined could happen.

“So, at this point I had gotten one of the girls toward the door before it turned into what you’re seeing,” they said, showing FOX4 a video of the fight.

It was last period of the day at Wyandotte High, and three girls were in class arguing when they stepped in to tell the one who wasn’t supposed to be in there to leave.

So, the science teacher started trying to get the students out of the classroom. As the girls were still screaming at each other, another student was instructed to go get a principal, and that’s when chaos ensued.

“I get my kid close to the door and I’m about to open it and I hear, ‘you B****,’ And I’m like, ‘Oh no,” they said.

The girl she told to leave the class, whom Aktipis says shouldn’t have been in there from the beginning, you can see that young lady starts swinging in the video.

From there it’s all a blur before another fight broke out in the classroom just minutes later.

Missouri Amendment 6 ‘going to have a drastic impact on public safety’

We reached out to the KCKPS asking a series of questions, including if charges would be filed. The district says:

“We can confirm that an incident occurred at Wyandotte High School. This is a student and employee matter, and we have no further comment.”

KCKPS has its own police department, so if charges would be filed or an investigation were to happen, the district would lead that. But to this point, Aktipis says none of the above has happened, and she doesn’t know why.

“Nobody should have to fight, nobody should have to say, ‘I was assaulted by a kid, please help me.’ For simply being a teacher,” Aktipis said.

Aktipis will return to school full-time after recovering from several injuries, including a hit to the head. When asked if they would be in the classroom next year, they didn’t know the answer.
